MDL Fanbeam® 4.2 and Fanbeam® 5 are advanced laser-based Position Reference Systems (PRS) designed for Dynamic Positioning (DP) vessels operating in offshore environments. Using high-precision time-of-flight laser technology, these systems accurately determine a vessel’s position relative to fixed or mobile targets such as offshore rigs, platforms, and support vessels.
The system transmits real-time positional data to the DP system, enabling automatic thruster adjustments to maintain precise vessel positioning—even in challenging sea conditions.
Core Working Principle
The Fanbeam system emits invisible laser pulses toward specially designed reflectors installed on offshore structures. These pulses are reflected back to the sensor, allowing the system to calculate range and bearing with exceptional accuracy.

The Fanbeam 5 Position Reference System (PRS) leverages precise time-of-flight laser technology to accurately determine a vessel’s position relative to custom reflectors, which can be securely mounted on offshore rigs, installations, or other vessels. This data is then transmitted to the vessel’s dynamic positioning (DP) system, which controls the thrusters to maintain the vessel’s position during operations.
With the advanced design of the Fanbeam 5 laser unit, custom reflectors, and the Fanbeam Controller 4.0 software, Fanbeam has become the preferred laser-based PRS.
