MDL Fanbeam® 4.2 and 5: Laser Rangefinders
The Fanbeam 5 Position Reference System (PRS) leverages precise time-of-flight laser technology to accurately determine a vessel’s position relative to custom reflectors, which can be securely mounted on offshore rigs, installations, or other vessels. This data is then transmitted to the vessel’s dynamic positioning (DP) system, which controls the thrusters to maintain the vessel’s position during operations.
With the advanced design of the Fanbeam 5 laser unit, custom reflectors, and the Fanbeam Controller 4.0 software, Fanbeam has become the preferred laser-based PRS. Its wide range of data outputs and seamless integration with other sensors and DP systems make it ideal for holding a vessel in position or for executing precise movements.

- Precise Targeting: The Fanbeam 5 unit is strategically mounted over the working end of the vessel. It emits invisible laser pulses that reflect off custom-mounted reflectors on rigs or other installations, returning to the Fanbeam sensor for accurate position determination.
False Observation Rejection: The Fanbeam Controller 4.0 software efficiently identifies and filters out false observations, ensuring that personnel on deck and reflective surfaces do not interfere with operations.
Pre-Programmed Range Filtering: Operators can set range cut-offs in advance to automatically filter out any observations beyond the specified range.
On-Screen Alerts: The system provides on-screen indicators to warn operators of potentially false observations, ensuring greater accuracy.
Versatile Reflector Options: Our custom reflectors are designed for various conditions. Tube reflectors offer affordable 360° coverage for short-range operations, while prism clusters deliver reliable positioning over longer ranges, up to 2000 meters.
USB with Manuals: The package includes a USB containing the Installation, Operation, and Software Manual for easy reference.
Auto-Level Filtering: The system automatically adjusts settings to accommodate changing conditions, maintaining optimal performance.
